Calm & Confidence at the Y: Empowering Children to Respond Rather than React

Does your child seem to have a busy mind?
Do they worry about what might happen, become overwhelmed by change, or have difficulty settling after an upsetting experience?
Perhaps social situations feel uncomfortable. Frustration or making a mistake may lead to shutting down, withdrawing, or having a much bigger reaction than anyone expected. Some children carry their stress quietly, while others express it through restlessness, irritability, avoidance, or strong emotions.
Every child experiences some of these moments. It does not necessarily mean that something is wrong, but it may tell us that a child needs more opportunities to understand what is happening inside them--and more tools for deciding what to do next.
Why Calm Must Come Before Confident Choices
Children are often told to calm down, focus, be brave, or make a better choice, but they are not always taught how.
When a child becomes caught in worry or a fight, flight, or freeze response, it can become much harder to think clearly, learn, solve problems, communicate, and connect with others. In those moments, simply being told to calm down may not be enough.
Children need opportunities to recognize their body's signals before those signals become overwhelming.
What happens to my breathing when I feel nervous? Why is my heart beating faster? Are my muscles becoming tight? Do I feel restless, frozen, or ready to run away?
Awareness creates a pause. Within that pause, a child can begin to recognize: Something is happening in my body--and I know something I can try.
That's where responding can begin to replace reacting.
Empowering Children With Practical Skills
I developed Calm & Confidence after noticing how increasingly stressed and anxious many of our children appear to be. They are navigating busy schedules, academic and social expectations, constant stimulation, and emotions they may not yet have the words or experience to understand.
The purpose of Calm & Confidence is not to prevent children from ever feeling worried, angry frustrated, or overwhelmed. Those feelings are part of being human.
The purpose is to empower children with greater self-awareness and practical skills so thet their feelings do not have to make every decision for them.
Confidence is more than feeling brave. It grows when a child begins to recognize:
I know what my body is telling me.
I have tools I can use.
I have choices about what I do next.
Through movement, creativity, nature, breathing, sound, sensory exploration, and reflection, children can experiment with different strategies and discover what genuinely helps them feel more grounded.
An Educational Wellness Program
Calm & Confidence is not therapy, nor is it intended to replace counseling or other mental health support.
It is a small-group, educational wellness program that gives children opportunities to practice self-awareness, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and confident decision-making in an encouraging environment.
These experiences may also complement the support children receive from their families, teachers, counselors, or therapists by giving them additional language and practical tools they an use in everyday situations.
A New Partnership with the Centennial Hills YMCA
I am delighted to announce that Good Vibrations Reiki & More is partnering with the Centennial Hills YMCA to bring Calm & Confidence at the Y to more children and families in our community.
The program will begin with three complimentary Saturday discovery classes for children ages
7-12 on September 12, 19, and 26. Each class offers children a different pathway for exploring calm and confidence:
Body Detective Adventure
Children will investigate signals such as breathing, heartbeat, muscle tension, and energy while experimenting with simple ways to help their bodies settle.
Sound & Vibration Adventure
Children will explore listening, movement, vibrations, and guided relaxation while noticing how different sounds affect their bodies and emotions.
Nature Adventure
Children will use outdoor exploration, observation, natural patterns, and textures to practice grounding and present-moment awareness.
Each September class is a complete one-hour experience of its own. Families may choose the class that interests them most or attend all three. No previous experience with mindfulness or meditation is needed.
The September discovery classes are optional introductions and are not prerequisites for the October series. Children may enroll directly in the October series whether or not they attend a September class.
Families whose child attends at least one complimentary September discovery class will receive the preferred October rate of $170.00. This is the same rate available during early registration; the regular price for the four-class series is $200.00.
A More In-Depth October Series
In October, Calm & Confidence at the Y will be offered as a series of four 90-minute classes.
This more in-depth experience will give children additional time to practice the skills, return to the ideas in different ways, and discover which strategies feel most helpful to them.
Through repeated opportunities for hands-on exploration, skills practice, guided discussion, reflection, creativity, and connection, children can begin to move beyond simply knowing a calming strategy to feeling more confident using it when it is actually needed.
The goal is not perfection. It is empowerment: helping children understand themselves, recognizing that they have choices, and knowing that they can take an active role in how they respond.
Supporting Children in Our Community
I am deeply grateful to the Centennial Hills YMCA for recognizing the importance of this work and welcoming Calm & Confidence into its youth programming.
If you are a parent, caregiver, educator, counselor, or therapist who knows a child who might benefit from this supportive place to explore self-awareness, emotional regulation, and confidence, I invite you to learn more and share this resource.
Calm & Confidence at the Y is designed for children 7-12. September discovery classes are complimentary, but advance registration is strongly encouraged as space is limited.
Sometimes empowerment begins with something very small: noticing a breath, naming a feeling, and realizing, I know something I can try.
Ready to Learn More?
Calm & Confidence at the Y is open to both YMCA members and non-members. All registration is completed directly through the Centennial Hills YMCA.
